Haters of God

The first chapter of Romans is my go to when people claim to be atheists. I refuse to concede atheism as a worldview. When I have conversations with people I care about, if I press the issue long enough, they eventually concede that they believe something is out there. The truth of God is evident just as scripture says. We know that this life is not some random cosmic accident. We all believe in truth, love, justice and many more intangible things.

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Romans 1:18-23

In these verses, we see that everyone knows the truth. God doesn’t judge us for what we don’t know. He judges us for what we do know, especially for those of us that have explicit revelation of His truth. It’s interesting to watch people suppress the truth they know in their hearts. They’ll claim they don’t believe in God, but one of the most common cries for help is His very name. Most Christians will say that this is sin and it’s taking the name of the Lord in vain. I say it’s just us acting as image bearers. We instinctively call out to God in times of need. My favorite instance of this involves the “god” of atheism, Richard Dawkins.

In the midst of a debate about the existence of God, he’s asked what the full title of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species” is. Dawkins struggled to remember what the name was and called out to God. This isn’t particularly common for “gods” of other faiths. In some cultures, you’ll even be killed for it. Yet, in a society as free as the one I currently enjoy, virtually everyone calls out to Jesus and Jesus alone whether we claim to believe in Him or not.

I’m not sure how common this is, but I’ve noticed that skeptics do pray as well. I watched one of my friends say a quick prayer as for Jesus’ favor on an opportunity that was potentially coming her way. Another friend of mine conceded that she does pray occasionally in private. It’s not surprising when people call out to God in times of life-threatening distress. Yet, some will say they sincerely don’t call out to God in any fashion at any time. That’s fair to say.

Take a look at your social circles. Are you involved in any groups that ridicule God? Are you involved in any groups that are dedicated to the unbelief in God? Are you a member of an “Atheist Church”? Do you dedicate time and energy to disproving God? If you’re putting energy into something you supposedly don’t believe in, you’re suppressing the truth. Where are the “Freedom From the Easter Bunny” groups? Why doesn’t “Tooth Fairy on the Slide” exist? Where are the philosophers and scientists bent on tearing down Santa Claus? Nobody is talking about them in the manner they talk about Jesus because they know those figures don’t exist and Jesus does.

The “Freedom From Religion” page on Facebook boasts 356,000+ likes. That’s  a lot of people talking about something they supposedly don’t believe in. The “Secular Coalition for America” has 85,000+ likes. “Exposing Religion” has over 100,000 likes. It goes on and on and on. From Atheist web forums to logos to worship services, the worship of the God we all know is just being transferred to created things instead of the creator on these pages. Little do they know, they are showing that they are made in His image when they seek community in this way. Alas, The bottom line is this: they make a veiled claim to be against “religion” but it’s just a cover for their hatred of Christianity and Jesus Himself.

How do I know this? Look at the pages! No one is ridiculing or attempting to disprove Mithras or Horus. Nobody is having a serious discussion about Zeus, Hercules, Hera, Leviathan, Ramuh, or any of the so-called gods in mystery religions. Very few are discussing Muhammed or Allah. Most of the talk is about Jesus and His followers. Why? Because they know in their hearts that He is God and they hate Him.

The last thing that really makes me raise an eyebrow at people that claim they don’t believe is the activism. Why do people actively pursue to remove any reference to Christ from the general public? If it’s not real, surely it doesn’t bother anyone, but it does. The cross is the most offensive symbol man has ever known because it forces him to stare his sin in the face. We have to choose to whether we will kneel before the cross or if we will flee from it. There is no neutral ground.

Example here, here, here, here, here,… well… you get it. Atheist activists only want Christ removed. They show little to no opposition to any other religious figures and often celebrate them for “the sake of tolerance” or some other hot garbage slogan.

You can only go so far in self-deceit before the truth shows itself. Eventually, because you are made in the image of God, you will show that you know the truth. God did not design reality as we perceive it in a way that it’s not possible to know Him. On the contrary, everything about life shouts His praises and shows His work.

I suggest to honest seekers to compare the claims of Christ up against any other. There’s no “god” like Him. Compare His claims with what nature reveals about the Creator. It all points to Jesus. All of it. You do not have to be separated from the King. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you will be saved.
